I’ve found a lost pigeon, what do I do?
Contact for the Warrnambool Racing Pigeon Club is 0419 722 203.
If you can handle the pigeon, please ring the phone number that is found on their life ring, a coloured band on one of their legs or you can report the lost pigeon by ringing any of the members listed on the members’ page.
What do I do in the mean-time?
It depends on the health of the pigeon. If the pigeon is injured and can be successfully caught, without causing further stress, please take the pigeon to a local vet as soon as possible where it can receive medical treatment.
If the pigeon is still flying free and hanging round, it will need water and food. To give it water, fill a bowl such as a dog bowl or other suitable container, one that is about 50 – 75 ml deep. To attract the birds attention, place the bowl/container, in a prominent place and allow the bird to hear the water running into it. Make sure the bowl is out of reach of predators, such as cats, and allow the bird to have free access.
Food such as rolled oats, canary seed or even a handful of chook pellets can be given either scattered on the lawn or in a container where the bird can easily reach it.
When the bird has rested and recovered some of its energy it will leave and set off to return to its home loft, if it stays a few days don’t worry, the bird will leave when it knows it’s ready.
